BOSTON, MA – The WestConn baseball team fell to 8-10 overall and 0-4 in Little East Conference play following a pair of losses at ninth-ranked UMass-Boston on Saturday afternoon. The games were originally slated to be played in Danbury but were shifted due to poor field conditions. The Colonials were edged in the opener, 3-1, before falling in the Game Two, 13-0.
Senior starting pitcher Shane Bierfeldt (Torrington, CT) took the tough loss for WestConn in the opener. Despite striking out 10 and allowing just three runs in eight innings of work, he fell to 3-1 overall.
It was a busy first inning as Dave Murphy smacked a two-run homer to put the Beacons ahead 2-0. The Colonials cut it to 2-1 in the bottom half when senior outfielder Clete LoRusso (New Milford, CT) roped an RBI single to left, scoring sophomore Brett Shaw (Southington, CT) who earlier singled through the right side.
UMass-Boston pushed across an insurance run in the sixth when Chris Fowler knocked an RBI double. WestConn was unable to get going offensively the rest of the game.
It was all Beacons in Game Two as they moved to 17-5 overall and 4-0 in the division. Murphy connected on his second home run of the afternoon and the Colonials squared up against a tough pitcher. UMB starter Fernando Burgos improved to 5-0 overall as he threw six innings, while striking out seven and not allowing just four hits.
WestConn will look to snap its five-game skid in their home opener against Purchase State on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
