DANBURY, CT – Seniors Joel Luna (Queens Village, NY) and Zach Sagar (Trumbull, CT) racked up three hits apiece to lead the Western Connecticut State University baseball squad to a 14-8 victory over visiting non-conference opponent Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham on Tuesday afternoon at Westside Field. With the win, the Colonials improved to 13-19 overall, while the Devils dropped to 10-27.
When all was said and done, the hosts pounded out 18 hits. Seniors Joe Daigle (Southington, CT), Bill Buscetto Jr. (Old Lyme, CT) and sophomores Matt Mancini (Waterbury, CT) and Vic Rodriguez (Torrington, CT) chipped in with two hits each for WestConn.
Rookie relief pitcher Zach Marquis (Bristol, CT) tossed 3.1 strong innings, striking out a pair while surrendering just one run to earn the win for the Colonials. FDU junior reliever Joseph DeFeo (Green Township, NJ) gave up four runs in two innings, dropping to 0-1 overall.
The hosts jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Mancini smashed a two-RBI single up the middle to cap the spurt. However, the Devils evened the score at 3-3 in the third when senior first baseman Christopher Franco (Wayne, NJ) ripped his fifth homerun of the year to left-center.
The teams exchanged a pair of runs in the fourth. FDU captured its first lead in the top of the fifth when senior catcher David Wilbur (Columbia, NJ) homered down the left field line. However, the Colonials retaliated with two runs in the bottom half to regain a 7-6 lead.
Junior Adam Wilson (Southington, CT) drove in a pair of runs with a single in the sixth, extending the advantage to 9-6. WestConn put up five more runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Sophomore Moe Ortiz-Echevarria (Norwalk, CT) highlighted the outburst with a two-run homer to left field.
"Our bats continued to stay hot. It was nice to see Luna have a day like that since its been a somewhat difficult year for him at the plate," said WestConn head coach John Susi. "Marquis has been a great find out of the bullpen," he added.
The Colonials return to action for another non-league tilt against visiting Wesleyan University on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
