DANBURY, CT – After outmuscling Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham yesterday, the Western Connecticut State University baseball squad edged visiting non-conference foe Wesleyan University, 8-7, on Wednesday evening at Westside Field. Senior Clete LoRusso (New Milford, CT) led the Colonials with three hits which included a pair of doubles off the center field wall, while classmate relief pitcher Taylor Donofrio (Terryville, CT) cemented the win with his record-setting seventh save of the season.
With the victory, WestConn improved to 14-19 overall, while the Cardinals dropped to 20-13. The Colonials hitting prowess continued as they racked up 13 hits for the game. Some stellar defensive plays also helped seal the win.
"We received an outstanding effort from starting pitcher Matt Fasoli. It was a great way to finish up our home slate," said WestConn head coach John Susi following the nailbiting win. "Wesleyan is a top-flight team and it has been a few years since we beat them, so this one feels good," he added.
The visitors drew first blood when sophomore outfielder Alex Cappitelli (North Caldwell, NJ) ripped his 2nd homerun of the year over the left field fence as the Cardinals snagged a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning.
WestConn cut the deficit to 3-2 in the fourth before tacking on another pair of runs in the fifth to seize a 4-3 lead. Sophomore first baseman Matt Mancini (Waterbury, CT) provided the go-ahead run with a single up the middle, scoring LoRusso.
The hosts widened the gap to 7-3 with a trio of runs in the sixth. However, Wesleyan countered quickly with four runs in the top of the seventh, deadlocking the score at 7-7.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, senior outfielder Joel Luna (Queens Village, NY) smashed a towering homer to left center for what would become the game-winning run. Donofrio entered in the eighth to record the final five outs, securing the win for classmate reliever Kyle Sanford (Torrington, CT).
Sophomore Tanner Fulkerson (Longmont, CO) finished with three hits and a pair of runs scored for the Cardinals, while classmate Alec Olmstead (Palo Alto, CA) took the loss in relief, moving to 4-3.
WestConn returns to action for a Little East Conference doubleheader in the regular season finale at Plymouth State on Saturday at noon. The doubleheader was moved feom Friday due to thunderstorms in the Granite State's forecast.
