DANBURY, CT – Rookie attackman Eric Caldwell (East Moriches, NY) tallied a game-high seven goals and dished out a pair of assists, while sophomore Robert Swensen (Danbury, CT) chipped in with five goals to lead the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team to a 17-3 win over visiting non-conference opponent Mitchell College on Wednesday night at The Westside Athletic Complex.
The Colonials outshot the Mariners, 38-17, while scooping up a commanding edge in the groundball column, 27-8. Sophomore midfielder Ryan Yursha (Middletown, DE) paced the hosts en route to 17-of-24 faceoff wins. Senior goalkeepers Patrick Tynan (Somers, CT) and Zach Craybas (Bethel, CT) combined to record two saves for the Colonials, while senior JD LeMay (Hopewell Junction, NY) finished with 11 for the Mariners. With the victory, WestConn improved to 3-3 overall, while Mitchell fell to 1-5.
The Colonials erupted to seize a 5-1 lead to end the opening quarter. Caldwell commenced the outburst with his 18th goal of the season before he rounded out the bombardment with his second score off a feed from rookie midfielder Christian Sparacino (Manorville, NY).
The outpouring continued in the second period as the hosts extended the lead to 12-2 at halftime. Caldwell began the flurry when he completed the hat trick, assisted by freshman John Ward (Mahopac, NY) with a man-up. Classmate Ryan Reuling (Groton, CT) rounded out the stanza with his seventh goal of the season.
The Colonials added another trio of goals in the third before rookie Jack Hamel (Poughkeepsie, NY) and senior Jonathan Thomas (Waterford, CT) each tickled the twine midway thru the fourth, widening the gap to 17-2. Mitchell freshman defender Matt Sauchuk (Mystic, CT) capped the scoring at 17-3 with 57 seconds remaining.
WestConn returns to action for its LEC opener at UMass-Boston on Saturday at 3 p.m.
