NEW LONDON, CT - After being postponed one day, the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team rolled to a 15-1 win at non-conference foe Mitchell College on Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Colonials improved to 4-5 overall, while the Mariners fell to 0-8.
Sophomore attackman Matthew Paternostro (Stratford, CT) tallied a game-high four goals for the Colonials, while rookie attackman Riley Graham (Oceanside, NY) netted a hat trick and dished out four assists. Sophomore Eric Caldwell (East Moriches, NY) also added a scoring strike and four helpers.
Senior Bryan Murchison (Huntington, NY) dominated the faceoff x going 12-for-13, while WestConn also outmuscled Mitchell on groundballs, 43-27, and shots, 56-26.
The Colonials opened the contest to seize a 9-0 lead at halftime. Paternostro netted his first goal of the game to conclude the barrage with 28 seconds remaining before the break.
WestConn held an 11-0 lead before the hosts broke up the shutout late in the third quarter. Paternostro rounded the scoring out at 15-1 when he tickled the twine with 2:46 left to play.
"Paternostro had a great day coming off the bench and Caldwell reached the 100-point club in only his second season for us," said WestConn head coach Ryan Cavanagh following the victory. The Colonials return to action when they square off against LEC rival UMass-Boston on Saturday at 4 p.m.
