WILLIMANTIC, CT - The Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team dropped a heart-breaking 1-0 decision at intra-state rival Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday in front of 200 fans at Nevers Field.
Griffin Luczek scored the game-winning goal for the Warriors with 1:44 remaining in regulation. He was set up by a pass from Justin Grant.
The Colonials fall to 7-5 overall and are now 2-2 in the Little East Conference. Eastern evens its record at 6-6 and captured its first league win and are now 1-3 in the LEC.
Daniel Szabo (Trubull, CT) came on in goal, for WestConn, following intermission. He allowed the only shot on goal for the Warriors in the second half.
Luca DiCarlo (Waterbury, CT) made one save in the first stanza in the loss.
Ryan Murphy earned the victory for Eastern after making five saves.
The Colonials out shot the Warriors, 17-9 on the afternoon, but only put five of those shots between the pipes.
"We have to start capitalizing on our shots," explained WestConn head coach Joe Mingachos. "This is a game we needed to get. With only four teams going to the LEC Tournament, each game is crucial."
WestConn does not have much time to dwell on the loss as it plays host to non-conference foe Trinity College on Sunday, October 8. Game time is set for 1 pm against the Bantams.
