Colonials Blanked By The Merchant Marine Academy, 9-0

DANBURY, CT - On a cold and blustery afternoon, the Western Connecticut State University men's tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision to a powerful squad from the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Westside Courts on Thursday afternoon.

The Colonials drop to 0-3 on the season while the Mariners improve to 4-5 in the early going.

William Hogan (Ridgefield, CT) and Jeffrey Hensley (Naugatuck, CT) were edged out, 8-6 by Branden Deeter and Matthew Schwartz at third flight doubles to close out the pairs' events.

In the other doubles matches, Barry Booth and Andrew Carey defeated Aaron Campos (Ridgefield, CT) and Jeffrey Baker (Simsbury, CT), 8-2 to open up the afternoon's wind-blown action.

WestConn's Chauncey Allers (Wilton, CT) and Matthew Carino (Sandy Hook, CT) could not hold off Jake McDonough and Daniel Zakrevski in second partners and eventually fell, 8-4.

The Colonials battled at singles, but the Mariners proved too strong from second to fourth solos.

Allers was the only host to force a third-set tiebreaker.  Against Deeter, he took the first set, 6-4 before falling 6-3 in the second set.  Deeter captured the match with a 10-8 result in the tiebreaker.

McDonough edged Campos at top flight singles, 7-5 and 7-6 (7-5) in another close match.

The Colonials play host to Salem State University on Saturday, April 7 at 1 pm.  Due to continued inclement weather in the forecast, Saturday's match will be played at the Four Seasons Racquet Club in Wilton, CT.
