Men’s Tennis Blanks Southern Maine to Claim First Victory, 9-0

GORHAM, ME – The Western Connecticut State University men's tennis squad claimed its first victory of the season, a 9-0 shutout win at Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon at Foreside Tennis Club. With the victory, the Colonials improved to 1-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

"A win was overdue for our team. Hopefully, we can get a streak going now," stated WestConn head coach Shawn Stillman following the action.

The Colonials opened play with a doubles win as senior Jeffrey Hensley (Naugatuck, CT) and rookie William Hogan (Ridgefield, CT) teamed up to seize an 8-0 victory.

Later in the day, sophomore Shivam Patel (Norwalk, CT) notched his first collegiate victory, opening singles play with a 6-4, 6-4 win. Hensley then wrapped up a singles win before rookie Matthew Carino (Sandy Hook, CT) earned a 6-3, 6-0 victory as he improved to 4-0 in LEC play this season for the Colonials. WestConn junior Chauncey Allers (Wilton, CT) rounded out the afternoon with his first singles win of the season, downing his opponent in straight sets.

The Colonials were slated to return to action against Purchase tomorrow. However, that contest has now been postponed due to the weather forecast.
