Colonials Drop A Pair To UMass Dartmouth In Their LEC Opening Day

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - The Western Connecticut State University softball team dropped its Little East Conference opening doubleheader at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 7-1 and 5-3, on Sunday afternoon.

The Colonials were the home team on the scoreboard as it was forced to make the three our trip to get the twinbill in as their field is still showing the effects of a wintery spring.

In the opener, the Colonials scattered six hits and scored an unearned run in the fourth inning.

Freshman Reilly McMahon (South Windsor, CT) plated Charline Plasczynski (Bristol, CT) with a squeeze bunt.  Plasczynski singled to lead off the inning but wound up at third base after a two-base error by the Corsairs' left fielder.

Plasczynski, Kamryn Geysen (East Hampton, CT) and Tori Dugan (Norwalk, CT) each went 2-for-3 in the opener.

Angelina Miller (Holbrook, NY) suffered the loss after going the distance and is now 2-6 on the season.  She allowed seven runs, six of them earned, on nine hits.  She struck out five and walked just one.

Jill Richards (Kingston, MA) and Maddie O'Gryzek (Norfolk, MA) each went 2-for-4 for the winners.  Richards drove in a pair of runs while O'Gryzek belted a triple for the Corsairs.

Lexi Pereira (Middleboro, MA) hit a solo home run in UMD's three run sixth inning.

Smith earned the victory and is now 7-3 on the season.  She allowed an unearned run on four hits over five innings.  She struck out five and walked two before giving way to Evensen for the final two innings.  Evensen allowed a pair of singles and struck out two.

In the nightcap, the Corsairs, now 17-4 overall and atop the conference at 4-0, came from behind on two occasions, the final time after scoring three runs in the top of the sixth inning and taking a 5-3 lead.

Freshman Kylie Fletcher (Dighton, MA) pounded a three-run home run over the fence in left field with what proved to be the game-winning runs.  She went 2-for-3 with the three RBI.

McMahon belted her first collegiate home run, a solo shot over the wall in left center, to put the Colonials up 3-2 after five innings.

Sara Tenke (Glen Cove, NY) drops to 0-7 on the season after allowing four runs on seven hits in five and third innings.  She struck out one.  Tenke started the game, then re-entered after Jaclyn Smith (Sandwich, MA) allowed a run in her only inning of work, the fourth inning.

Hannah Smith (Attleboro, MA) earned the victory in the nightcap and is now 8-3 on the season.  She came on in relief of starter Victoria Woodward (Middleboro, MA) in the third inning.  Smith allowed one run on two hits, struck out one and walked two in three innings.

Annika Evensen (Lake Forest, CA) earned her second save of the season after holding the Colonials scoreless over the final two innings.  She truck out two.

The Colonials, now 4-16 overall and 0-2 in the LEC, travels to SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday, April 11.  The twinbill against the Hawks is set to begin at 3 pm.
