Miller Hurls Shutout As Colonials Split With Owls

DANBURY, CT - Sophomore righty Angelina Miller (Holbrook, NY) tossed a four-hit shutout in the nightcap to help the Western Connecticut State University softball team earn a split with visiting Keene State College. The Owls captured the opener, 1-0, before the Colonials came back to take the nightcap, 5-0 at Westside Field on Saturday afternoon.

Miller, now 3-6 on the season, allowed just one extra-base hit while striking out six and walking none in WestConn's home-opening doubleheader.

The Colonials scattered 10 hits in the nightcap with Sara Tenke (Glen Cove, NY), Natalia Hart (Milford, CT) and Erica Bower (Hillsborough, NJ) each collected two hits for the winners.

WestConn, now 6-17-1 overall and 1-3 in the Little East Conference, scored three runs in the bottom half of the third inning.  Charline Plasczynski (Bristol, CT), Kamryn Geysen (East Hampton, CT) and pinch hitter Annie Rosa (Washington, CT) had run-scoring hits in the frame and chased Olivia McGrath (Dorchester, MA) from the center circle. 

McGrath suffered the loss and is now 1-5 on the year.  She allowed three runs on six hits before handing the ball over to Issie Pratt (Bristol, CT).  Pratt allowed two runs on four hits while striking out one and walking three over three innings of work.

Molly St. Germain (Dover, NH) mopped up and struck out one in a scoreless sixth inning.

In the opener, Brooke Arruda (Pawtucket, CT) registered a ground-out RBI, plating Shae Crosby (Salem, CT) in the opening inning.

St. Germain kept the WestConn hitters at bay for seven innings.  She allowed five hits, struck out eight and walked one and is now 4-7 on the season.

Tenke suffered the loss and is now 1-8.  She allowed seven hits while striking out two and walking one over five innings.  Jaclyn Smith (Sandwich, MA) allowed one hits and struck out one in the final two innings.

Crosby collected three of the Owls' eight singles in the early match-up.

Keene State is now 6-13 overall and 2-3 in the league.

WestConn's make-up doubleheader with UMass Boston on Sunday has already been postponed and will be played on Sunday, April 22.  The Colonials travel to intra-state rival Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday, April 17.  The twinbill is set to start at 5 pm in Mansfield.
