DANBURY, CT – Junior guard Jancy Sherwood (Poughquag, NY) racked up a game-high 24 points, while senior guard Kaitlyn LaBonte (South Windsor, CT) chipped in with 22 to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball squad to a 106-63 victory over visiting non-conference foe Mitchell College on Wednesday night at The O'Neill Center's Feldman Arena. With the win, the Colonials improved to 4-2 overall, while the Mariners dropped to 1-5.
WestConn used stifling defense as they forced 38 turnovers while committing just 18. They finished 17-of-37 from three-point range, while the Mariners were held to just a pair of made shots from beyond the arc.
Senior guard Ashleigh Beauford (Newington, CT) paced Mitchell with 14 points, while sophomores Haley Garcia (South Windsor, CT) and Ariana Carter (Central Falls, RI) added 13 and 11, respectively.
"I'm not sure what is going with our team. We need to get more consistent throughout the entire game and not just put together a strong third quarter," said WestConn head coach Kimberley Rybczyk following the contest. "But I'm proud of the way we bounced back from Saturday's loss to earn this win," she added.
After a sluggish start, the Colonials built a 21-13 lead in the opening quarter when sophomore guard Gabrielle Hurlbert (Thomaston, CT) buried a trifecta. Mitchell began to respond as they reeled off a 13-3 run that began late in the quarter and carried into the second stanza. Sophomore guard Jessica Lohneiss (West Hartford, CT) knocked down a mid-range jumper to round out the spurt, giving the Mariners a 29-28 lead with 4:18 remaining before halftime.
WestConn countered with a 15-6 flurry to regain the advantage and head into the locker room ahead 43-35 as rookie forward Sydney Gouveia (New Fairfield, CT) drained a shot from downtown off a nifty feed from LaBonte.
The Colonials came to life in the third quarter as they pounded out a 26-7 run. Rookie forward Asiah Knight (Norwalk, CT) – who finished with a game-high 12 rebounds – hit a layup to build up a 27-point advantage. It was more of the same in the fourth quarter as WestConn cruised to the win.
The Colonials return to action for a Little East Conference matchup at UMass-Dartmouth on Saturday at 1 p.m.
