DANBURY, CT - Sophomores Jessica Davis (Hamden, CT) and Genesis Torres (Stratford, CT) each scored nine points in Western Connecticut State University women's basketball 75-43 loss to Manhattanville College at Feldman Arena on Monday afternoon.
Manhattanville, 8-1, raced out to a 20-3 advantage after the first quarter and never looked back.
The closest WestConn would get the rest of the way was 15 points, 20-5, after Torres converted a pair of free throws in the opening minutes of the second quarter. With 4:06 remaining in the third stanza, Faith Thurmond (Seymour, CT) nailed a lay in to get the Colonials within 16 points, 40-24, but that would be end of any thoughts of a comeback for the hosts.
Kayleah McGuire (Somers, NY) scored a game-high 19 points while Nancy Caballero (Henderson, NV) and Sarah Coutu (Cranston, RI) added 17 and 12 points, respectively for the winners.
Caballero collected a game-high 12 rebounds while Coutu and Kymane Jones (Washingtonville, NY) each dished out five assists for the Valiants.
Asiah Knight (Norwalk, CT) pulled down a team-high 11 caroms for the Colonials.
The Colonials, now 7-5, were without the services of their top two scorers, Jancy Sherwood (Poughquag, NY) and Kaitlin LaBonte (South Windsor, CT) who watched from the bench on Monday. The WestConn's offense, which came into Monday's game with a 98.5 team scoring average, was stagnant because of it. It shot just 19.2% (15-of-78) from the field including missing its first 26 attempts from the field.
WestConn returns to Little East Conference action on Saturday, January 6 when it plays host to Plymouth State University. Tip-off is slated for 1 pm. The Valiants host Misericordia on Wednesday, January 3 at 8 pm.
