Sydney Gouveia Registers Double-Double In WestConn's Win Over Keene State

DANBURY, CT - Freshman Sydney Gouveia (New Fairfield, CT) scored 11 points and pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team to a 76-65 victory over visiting Keene State College in a rare Little East Conference matinee at Feldman Arena on Wednesday afternoon.

Gouveia, who was one point away from matching her season-high of 12 points, connected on 4-of-9 shots from the field including 3-of-7 from three point range.

Junior Jancy Sherwood (Poughquag, NY), who returned to the line up after missing the last three games, led the Colonials with 15 points.  Kaitlyn LaBonte (South Windsor, CT) and Frances Snyder (Pine Plains, NY) chipped in eight points apiece for the winners.

Keene State, now 2-12 overall and 0-4 in the league, were paced by Emily McPadden (Tyngsborough, MA) and Jordyn Burke (Bennington, VT) which tallied 19 and 14 points, respectively.  Burke lead all players with 13 caroms while Kenzie Bennett (Lake George, NY) gathered a dozen boards.

WestConn, now 9-6 overall and 2-2 in the LEC, led from start to finish including building its largest lead of 15 points, 18-3, following a layup from Genesis Torres (Stratford, CT) with 1:45 remaining in the opening stanza.

The closest the Owls would get the rest of the way was five points, on four different occasions over the final three quarters.  A long three pointer from McPadden, with 7:37 remaining in the final period, cut Keene State's deficit to 56-51.

"This season has been a series of ups and downs and it was good to get back on track today after our loss on Monday (at The Sage Colleges),"  said WestConn's 16-year head coach Kimberley Rybczyk.  "Our freshmen, especially Sydney (Gauveia), Frances (Snyder) and Faith Thurmond (Seymour, CT), played extremely well today and gave us a big lift.

The Colonials play host to University of Massachusetts Boston this Saturday, January 13.  Tip-off is slated for 1 pm between WestConn and the Beacons.

WestConn will be celebrating Alumni Day on Saturday and prior to the women's tip, there will be the first-ever men's and women's basketball alumni co-ed game.  The "legends" will hit the hardwood at 11 am with a reception to follow in the Colonials' Hall of Fame.
