ENGLEWOOD, FL - Western Connecticut State University junior midfielder Lauren Bradshaw (Bethel, CT) scored a hat-trick, but it wasn't enough to fend off Westfield State University as the Owls defeated the Colonials, 21-9 at the Spring Fling in Florida on Monday morning.
Freshmen Caroline Galligan (Marshfield, MA) and Kelly Lourenco (New Milford, CT) notched a pair of goals apiece while Brooke Baldelli (New Fairfield, CT) and Molly Morrison (Bow, NH) each tallied one goal in the loss, their second in the past 14 hours.
Baldelli, Bradshaw and Kelly Martin (Suffield, CT) handed out one assist each.
Sydney Lambert led the way for Westfield State, now 3-0, with four goals and an assist. Haley Mate, Hunter Zackaricz, Samantha Coyle and Maddie Bartkus each scored two goals.
Maria Woodall earned the victory between the pipes after making nine saves over 55 minutes of work. Emma Duffy mopped up for the final five minutes and allowed one goal.
Jennifer Sawicki (Westbury, NY) made three saves for the Colonials, which drop to 1-2 on the young season.
After taking a 1-0 lead, following a goal by Bradshaw 2:14 into the contest, the Owls scored six straight and never looked back.
Westfield State outshot the Colonials, 31-23, but WestConn held and advantage on ground balls, 17-12.
WestConn will enjoy a break on Tuesday before taking on Fredonia State on Wednesday, March 14. Game time is set for 10 am.
