David James And Nick Kimball Shine In 38-21 Win Over Mass. Maritime

DANBURY, CT - Sophomore running back Roy Penn-Consentino (Liberty, NY) rushed 16 times for 100 yards and senior quarterback David James (Stamford, CT) threw for 313 yards and three touchdowns as the Western Connecticut State University football team improved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference following its 38-21 victory over Massachusetts Maritime Academy at the Westside Athletic Complex on Saturday night.

James finished the night completing 21-of-30 passes, with one interception and 313 yards.  His touchdown throws were 39, 28 and 30 yards, respectively.

Nick Kimball (New Milford, CT) was on the receiving end of James' first two TD tosses and finished with a game-high nine catches for 155 yards.

Sophomore Will Daniels (Bethel, CT) caught the 30-yard touchdown to give the Colonials a 31-21 lead midway through the final quarter.  Daniels finished with six catches for 101 yards on the night.

Mass. Maritime, which had trailed 24-7 after WestConn's Jordan D'Onofrio (Orange, CT) booted a 27-yard field goal with 9:23 remaining in the third stanza.  D'Onofrio also had a tremendous night averaging 47.5 yards on four punts.

Back-to-back touchdowns by the Buccaneers cut the visitor's deficit to three points, 24-21. 

Ja'iel Johnson (Dodge City, KS) started the comeback with a 12-yard run up the middle, with 5:05 left in the third.

Senior signal caller Ty Ebdon (Gales Ferry, CT) found Will Bennett (Sandwich, MA) from 26 yards out and George Lampros (Bridgewater, MA) added the extra point and MMA put a scare into the announced Homecoming crowd of 1999 with 2:26 left in the third period.

Ebdon, who shared time with Matt Long (Weymouth, MA) behind center, completed 8-of-11 passes for 103 yards.  Long, who is counted on to patrol the option offense, completed 7-of-16 for 82 yards while leading the Buccaneers with 34 yards on 20 carries, including a one-yard TD run in the opening minutes of the second quarter.

Sophomore running back Anthony Via, II (Washingtonville, NY) added an insurance score when he plowed through the middle from five yards out with 4:45 left in regulation.  Via, II finished with 70 yards on 10 carries.

"It was satisfying getting the run game going against a really good defensive front tonight,"  stated WestConn head coach Joe Loth.

WestConn racked up 522 total offensive yards while yielding just 276 to the visitors.

Defensively, Vincent Scancarello (Monroe, NY) led the Colonials with seven tackles, two for a loss and one quarterback sack.  He nearly picked off a pass as the hosts clamped down defensively in the second half.

"We did a great job eliminating the leading rusher in the conference tonight,"  added Loth.

Peter Banks (Webster, MA) led MMA, which falls to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the MASCAC, with a game-high nine tackles.  He registered one of four QB sacks for the Buccaneers.

WestConn plays host to Westfield State University next Saturday, October 19.  Game time is slated for 4 pm.
