FITCHBURG, MA - Senior quarterback David James (Stamford, CT) and sophomore wide receiver Will Daniels (Bethel, CT) helped the Western Connecticut State University football end its two-game skid as the Colonials defeated Fitchburg State University, 41-7 on Saturday afternoon at Elliot Field.
James completed 21-of-30 passes for 228 yards and tossed three touchdowns while Daniels led all players with nine catches for 121 yards and was on the receiving end of two of James' TD throws.
Sophomore running back Jashua Alvarez (Staten Island, NY) had his finest game as a Colonials, rushing 10 times for 82 yards and scoring on a two-yard run. His touchdown proved to be the game-winning score with 13:11 remaining in the third quarter.
After a scoreless first quarter, WestConn went up 7-0 when James connected with senior Nick Kimball (New Milford, CT) three seconds past the midway point of the third stanza.
Fitchburg State, which ends its season at 2-8 overall and 1-7 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference, tied the game at 7-7 after Connor Fitzsimons found Jesse Brown open for a 14-yard touchdown with 39 seconds left in the first half.
Fitzsimons went 11-for-25 for 96 yards, but was intercepted twice, while Brown led the hosts with four catches for 46 yards on Saturday.
Following Daniels' first TD of the afternoon, a 13-yard catch with 3:26 left in the third quarter, the Colonials scored 20 unanswered point in the final quarter.
Devon Smith (Wethersfield, CT) scored on a one-yard run out of the wildcat formation four seconds into the final stanza.
Daniels and James hooked up from seven yards out with 10:20 left in the game then back-up quarterback Thomas Walsh (Great River, NY) capped off the scoring with an 11-yard run in the closing minutes.
Senior Jordan D'Onofrio (Orange, CT) converted 5-of-6 extra point and averaged 37.7 yards on three punts for another solid performance for WestConn.
Steven Lawton led the Falcons ground attack and finished with a game-high 28 carries and 124 yards.
Richard Austin and Arnold Cadell, Jr. each had a team-high seven tackles for Fitchburg State.
The Colonials, now 7-2 overall and 5-2 in the MASCAC, close out the regular season next Saturday against Plymouth State University. The WestConn seniors will be honored prior to the 12 noon start at the Westside Athletic Complex.
