DANBURY, CT – Rookie forward Jaheim Young (Brooklyn, CT) notched 18 points to lead five players in double figures as the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team downed visiting non-conference opponent Elms College, 88-50, on Tuesday night at Feldman Arena. The Colonials held a slim 34-31 lead at the break but erupted for 54 second half points en route to upping their record to 3-1 overall. The Blazers dropped to 2-2.
Senior forward Fenton Bradley Jr. (Mansfield, CT) and sophomore guard Ahmod Privott (Middletown, CT) added 11 points apiece for the Colonials, while reserves Tracy Cleckley (Rosedale, NY) and Ryan Alkins (St. Albans, NY) each chipped in with 10. Junior forward Nikolas Brown (Wellington, FL) was the lone player to tally double figures for Elms, finishing with 10.
As has been the case in the early-going this season, WestConn continued to dominate the boards. They would finish with a 47-34 advantage on the glass. They also stepped up the defensive intensity in the second stanza, forcing 30 turnovers for the contest, while coughing the ball up just 11 times themselves.
The Colonials jumped out to an early 15-5 advantage. However, the Blazers battled back to seize a 25-19 lead on back-to-back three-pointers from junior guard Tyler Barney (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) and Brown. However, the hosts responded with a spurt of their own en route to the 34-31 halftime lead.
WestConn would reel off a 19-2 run early in the second stanza to put the game out of reach, holding Elms to just 19 in the period.
The Colonials return to action at non-league foe Becker on Thursday at 6 p.m.
