PATCHOGUE, NY – After a tough season-opening overtime loss at Vassar on Friday, four different players pierced the scoring column as the WestConn men's soccer team rebounded with a 4-1 victory at non-conference foe St. Joseph's (LI) on Monday afternoon. Junior goalkeeper Daniel Szabo (Trumbull, CT) surrendered just one goal, while finishing with three saves to earn his first win of the season for the Colonials.
The visitors drew first blood less than one minute into the contest when junior midfielder Vinicius Santana (Sao Paulo, Brazil) netted an unassisted goal. Moments later, the Golden Eagles deadlocked the count at 1-1 when Rayneri Ruiz connected on a sharp-angled shot.
WestConn would strike for three goals in the second half en route to the victory. Rookie forward Franz Muhaj (Bridgeport, CT) booted a shot into the top corner off a header feed from junior midfielder Afa Reyes (Bridgeport, CT) in the 47th minute of play.
The visitors widened the gap to 3-1 when first-year midfielder Kent Eannarino (Brookfield, CT) fired home an unassisted tally. Junior forward Joseph Fortuna (Burlington, CT) rounded the scoring out at 4-1 late in the half off a long cross.
"I'm happy the way our team responded after the difficult loss the other day," said WestConn head coach Joe Mingachos. "But we still have some things to work on this week before our next game on Friday," he added.
The Colonials return to action against non-league opponent Elms College at the MCLA Tournament on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
