NEW LONDON, CT – Junior forward Ricardo Rodriguez (Danbury, CT) netted a goal and dished out an assist to lead the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer squad to a 3-1 non-conference victory at Coast Guard on Tuesday night. With the win, the Colonials improved to 4-1 overall while the hosts dropped to 2-2.
The Bears jumped ahead midway through the first half when Pryor Miller fired a shot into the twine. The hosts would maintain the 1-0 advantage heading into the break.
However, the Colonials responded with a trio of scoring strikes in less than five minutes in the second stanza en route to the come-from-behind win. Rodriguez found classmate Matthew Restrepo (Bridgeport, CT) to begin the flurry, knotting the count at 1-1 in the 52nd minute.
Moments later, junior midfielder Afa Reyes (Bridgeport, CT) blasted home an unassisted goal before Rodriguez connected off a feed from rookie Kent Eannarino (Brookfield, CT) in the 56th minute to set the final score at 3-1.
Junior goalkeeper Daniel Szabo (Trumbull, CT) stopped a shot for the Colonials and picked up the win, while Dakota Harich made three saves for the Bears and took the loss.
"We got off to a sluggish start but we were finally able to grab the momentum in the second half," said WestConn assistant coach Prince Ojok. "I was pleased with our intensity and effort after the break," he concluded.
The Colonials return to action for yet another non-league battle when they host Emmanuel on Thursday at 7 p.m.
