NEW HAVEN, CT – The Western Connecticut State University softball team split a doubleheader against Rhode Island College at Albertus Magnus on Thursday evening. WestConn dropped the opener, 8-2, before winning the nightcap, 3-0. With the split, the Colonials moved to 17-13 overall and 5-7 in league play, while the Anchorwomen moved to 17-13 and 4-8.
Junior Charline Plasczynski (Bristol, CT) paced WestConn with three hits on the day. Trailing 5-0 in Game One, she bashed a two-run homer off the center field fence, slicing the deficit to 5-2 in the fourth. Those were the only runs the Colonials would plate as they faced a red-hot Briana Gough on the mound for RIC. She tossed all seven innings while striking out four.
WestConn pushed a pair of runners across the plate via squeeze bunts in the nightcap. Plasczynski tallied the first when he touched home on the sacrifice from senior Nicole Bonanni (Norwalk, CT) in the second. Moments later, they added another squeeze run when sophomore Reilly McMahon (East Windsor, CT) laid down the bunt to score junior Erica Bower (Hillsborough, NJ), giving the Colonials a 2-0 lead.
Bower would rope a triple to right center and come around to score on a single to right off the bat of sophomore Kara Hanson (East Haven, CT) to round the count out at 3-0.
WestConn returns to action for a twin bill on Saturday against LEC foe Southern Maine starting at 3 p.m. The games will be played at Sacred Heart University.
