Splitsville Again As Colonials Draw With Southern Maine

FAIRFIELD, CT - The Western Connecticut State University softball team kept its post-season hopes alive on Saturday after splitting a Little East Conference doubleheader with University of Southern Maine at Sacred Heart University on Saturday afternoon. The Colonials captured the opener 7-2 before being edged by the Huskies, 2-1 in the nightcap.

As the regular season nears a conclusion, WestConn sits at 18-14 overall and 6-8 in the league while Southern Maine is now 21-16 and finish its league slate at 8-8.

The Colonials are schedule to face UMass Dartmouth which sits atop the league standings at 11-3, with Plymouth State University hoping for a WestConn sweep on Sunday, finished in league tilts at 11-5.

In the opener, senior righty Jaclyn Smith (Sandwich, MA) pitched a complete game five hitter and is now 6-4 in her final campaign.  She allowed two runs on five hits, struck out eight and walked three.

Sophomore Annie Rosa (Washington, CT) belted a two-run home run in the bottom half of the first inning to give the Colonials a 2-0 advantage and put her atop the team table with five round trippers.

Charlene Plasczynski (Bristol, CT) drew even with Rosa when she added an insurance solo home run in bottom half of the sixth inning, with WestConn already leading, 6-2.

Alexa Brown (Malden, MA) accounted for both of the Huskies' runs as she had a two-RBI single in top of the third inning.

Brooke Cross went 2-for-4 with a run scored for USM in the opener.

Ashley Alward (Cornville, ME) suffered the loss after going four and one third innings, giving up five runs, only three of them earned, on three hits.  She struck out six and walked two before yielding to Madison Greene for the final five outs.  Greene two runs, one of them earned on three hits, struck out one and walked anouther.

In the nightcap, Brown took to the center circle and kept the Colonials off balance through seven innings.  She improves to 10-7 on the season after the complete-game four hitter.  She allowed an unearned run, struck out five and walked four in the victory.

She out-dueled WestConn junior Sara Tenke (Glen Cove, NY) who gave up both runs, one of them earned, struck out six and walked one.  She falls to 4-5 on the season.

The nightcap's hurlers turned out to be much of the offensive production for both teams.

Brown went 2-for-3 and drove in a first-inning run while Tenke went 2-for-4 and scored the Colonials' only run.  She came into score when USM catcher threw the ball away when Erica Bower (Hillsborough, NJ) stole second back with runners on the corners.

The Huskies' winning run came across in the fourth inning when Hannah Kenney (Oxford, ME) registered a sacrifice-fly-RBI to center field to plate Kathleen Rattazzi (Tuxedo, NY).
