Tashai Price And Jancy Sherwood Close Out Careers

DANBURY, CT - Seniors Tashai Price (Vernon CT) and Jancy Sherwood (Poughquag, NY) closed out their collegiate careers on Saturday as the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team dropped an 89-69 decision to visiting University of Southern Maine at Feldman Arena.

Sherwood and sophomore Asiah Knight (Norwalk, CT) led the Colonials with 13 points apiece while Gabrielle Hurlburt (Thomaston, CT) added eight points in the loss.

Four other WestConn players finished with six points, including Price, Genesis Torres (Stratford, CT), Imani Baptiste (Highland, NY) and Hannah Maghini (Bristol, CT).

Torres dished out a game-high six assists and mad three steals on Saturday.

The Huskies, now 15-10 overall and 11-5 in the Little East Conference, were led by sophomore reserve guard Kristen Curley's (Gorham, ME) 25 points.

Victoria Harris (Altus, OK) came off the bench to net 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field.  Alexa Srolovitz (Montreal, QC) and Jackie Luckhardt (Londonderry, NH) chipped in 13 and 10 points, respectively, for the winners.

USM shot 55.4% from the field, making 41-of-74 attempts and were perfect on six tries from the free-throw line in the victory.

After eight lead changes and a pair of deadlocks through the opening 17 minutes, the Huskies took the lead, 27-26, following a bucket in the lane by Chantel Eells (Turner, ME).  The visitors would never trail again and went into intermission with a 40-31 advantage.

The closest WestConn would get would be four points, 45-41 after freshman forward Katelyn Fanning (Dobbs Ferry, NY) buried a pair of free throws with 7:31 remaining in the third stanza.

Southern Maine earn the third seed in the upcoming LEC Tournament, which begins on Tuesday, February 19, and will host league newcomer Castleton University.  Game time at Hill Gymnasium in Gorham.

The Colonials, fall to 11-14 and close out the season with a 5-11 league mark.
