DANBURY, CT – Senior Gabrielle Hurlbert (Thomaston, CT) and sophomore Hannah Maghini (Bristol, CT) tallied 11 points apiece, while rookie Jasmine Caldwell (Mt. Vernon, NY) added eight and a team-high nine rebounds to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball squad to a 70-63 victory over visiting non-league foe Mitchell College on Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena. With the win, the Colonials improved to 3-6 overall, while the Mariners sank to 4-5.
Three players netted double figures for Mitchell. Sophomore forward Amina Wiley (New Rochelle, NY) notched game-highs of 21 points and 16 rebounds, while senior Kelsey Hernandez (New Britain, CT) and rookie Sam McKenna (Millbrook, NY) contributed 15 and 10 points, respectively.
WestConn would dominate the offensive glass in the opening half en route to a 35-27 halftime advantage.
The hosts stretched the margin to as many as 13 when sophomore forward Katelyn Fanning (Dobbs Ferry, NY) buried a three-pointer midway through the third quarter. However, the visitors were able to muscle their way to the free throw line and cut the deficit to 51-48 heading into the final quarter.
After the first three quarters were slow and controlled, the fourth played at a frenetic pace. A baseline jumper from Hernandez trimmed the WestConn lead to just one point with 9:17 left to play. The Colonials retaliated with an 11-2 run capped by a layup from senior Jessica Davis (Hamden, CT), good for a 62-52 lead with 6:24 remaining.
The Mariners would close the gap to 66-63. However, stellar free throw shooting in the waning minutes from WestConn rookie guard Lola Herman (Brooklyn, NY) – who finished with nine points and five rebounds – would help cement the 70-63 win for the Colonials.
