Baldelli Erupts for Seven Goals as Women's Lacrosse Edges Bard, 15-13

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY – Junior midfielder Brooke Baldelli (New Fairfield, CT) erupted to score a game-high seven goals to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse squad to a 15-13 win at non-conference opponent Bard College on Thursday afternoon. Senior Lauren Bradshaw (Bethel, CT) tacked two goals and four assists, while sophomore Caroline Galligan (Marshfield, MA) chipped in with a pair of scoring strikes and three helpers for the Colonials.

With the victory, the Colonials improved to 2-0 overall while the Raptors dropped to 1-1.

Bard jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first five minutes, and it was 5-2 with about 12 minutes gone in the game when the Colonials came to life. Consecutive goals by Baldelli, senior Samantha Lawlor (Brookfield, CT) and Bradshaw tied the game with 11:29 left in the first half.

The teams traded goals to make it 6-6, but WestConn took its first lead on a Baldelli goal at the 8:14 mark, and Bradshaw made it 8-6 a couple of minutes later. Bard got one back and WestConn led, 8-7, at halftime.

Bard tied it up to start the second half, WestConn took the lead again on a free position goal by Galligan, but the Raptors responded yet again. It was 9-9 with 27 minutes left, 10-10 with 22 minutes left, 11-11 with 18 minutes left, and 12-12 with 16 minutes left.

That is when the game changed.

Rookie Jasmine Coleman (Northford, CT) scored from close range off a pass from senior Amber Andrews (New Milford, CT) to make it 13-12, and then Baldelli scored consecutive goals, both on assists from Bradshaw, to make it 15-12 with 6:03 remaining. Bard scored in the final minute.

The difference in the game was at goalie. WestConn sophomore Jennifer Sawicki (Westbury, NY) made 16 saves – eight in each half. Bard made four saves.

Bard outshot WestConn, 34-26, but the Colonials had the edge in ground balls, 30-29.

WestConn returns to action for a matchup against Mount Holyoke in Clearwater, Florida on Sunday.
