Baldelli and Galligan Each Score Two Goals In Loss At Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, CT - Junior Brooke Baldelli (New Fairfield, CT) and sophomore Caroline Galligan (Marshfield, MA) both scored twice for the Colonials, but the Coast Guard women's lacrosse to a 12-7 victory over Western Connecticut State University on Tuesday night in non-conference action. The Bears win their second in a row to improve to 3-7 on the season, while WestConn drops to 6-3 and have now lost two games in a row.

Senior Lauren Bradshaw (Bethel, CT) had one goal and two assists, while freshman Jasmine Coleman (Northford, CT) and senior Samantha Lawlor (Brookfield, CT) scored a goal each for WestConn. 

Maddie Rizzuto had a six point night to lead the Bears.  Rizzuto tallied four goals and two assists, while also adding two draw controls. Sophomores Etta Davis and Mel Goins scored a pair each for the Bears. Senior Carter Sanderson and sophomore Haley McCue both had one goal and two assists. Freshman Kathrine Pittman and sophomore Haley Howard rounded out scoring for Coast Guard with one goal each.

Goins scored the first of the game at 25:36 that sparked a three goal run within the first seven minutes of play. Galligan scored for Western Connecticut on a free-position shot at 16:03 to put the Colonials on the board as they trailed, 3-1. Rizzuto sparked another three goal run for the Bears at 12:23, capped by Goins at 5:34 with her second of the day to give the Bears a 6-1 advantage. Baldelli and Coleman scored the final two goals of the half to cut the Colonials deficit, 6-3.

Baldelli scored the opening goal of the half to bring WestConn with two, 6-4. Howard answered on a free-position goal at 24:35, making it 7-4. Bradshaw scored at 19:59, bringing the Colonials within two again but Davis sparked a five goal run at 18:33 that extended to 5:33 on a free-position goal from Howard to give the Bears a 12-5 lead. Galligan and Lawlor scored back-to-back goals for WestConn at 3:18 and 2:55, both on man-up situations to end the game with the 12-7 final.

Sophomore goalkeeper Mary Budri made nine saves in her 41 minutes of action,while classmate Rebecca Dolan made four saves in her 19 minutes of play. For WestConn, sophomore Jennifer Sawicki (Westbury, CT) made 11 saves in the setback.

Coast Guard held a 12-9 advantage in draw controls and both teams were even with 30 shots each.

The Colonials travel to Keene State College for a 1pm meeting with the Owls on Saturday, April 6.  The Bears are back in action New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action this Saturday on the road at Springfield, also at 1 pm.
