PATCHOGUE, NY – Junior Ali Brochu (Winsted, CT) buried match-highs of 11 and 12 kills in wins over Penn-State Abington and St. Joseph's (LI), respectively, as the Western Connecticut State University women's volleyball team improved to 5-0 overall on Saturday. The Colonials blanked the Nittany Lions, 3-0 (25-16, 25-9, 25-19) before shutting out the Golden Eagles, 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-22).
Reigning LEC Rookie of the Week Rory McMaster (Canton, MI) also dished out match-highs of 32 and 29 assists for the Colonials, while sophomore Abbi Debes (New Milford, CT) added two solo blocks and six block assists on the day.
"We're happy with the results we got today against two gritty teams. We had to rebound a couple of times from bad starts against St. Joe's, but were able to finish," said WestConn head coach Don Ferguson at the conclusion of the afternoon. "We are looking forward to getting back to the gym and cleaning up some details," he added.
After breezing past Penn State in the opener, the Colonials trailed 7-2 to begin the match against the Golden Eagles. However, they retaliated to seize a 19-18 lead and were able to hold off their opponent in Game One. It was a similar situation in Game Two as WestConn fell behind 5-1. But they responded quickly en route to a 25-20 win. The third and final set was neck-and-neck as the Colonials were able to edge St. Joe's by three points and head home with a pair of shutout wins.
WestConn has a challenging week ahead as they travel to a pair of non-conference NESCAC opponents in Trinity on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and host Wesleyan with Vassar on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. They also host Morrisville on Friday at 7 p.m.
