Women’s Volleyball Rally Falls Short Against SUNY-Morrisville, 3-2

DANBURY, CT – Despite team-highs of 13 kills apiece from juniors Victoria Korzan (Southbury, CT) and Ali Brochu (Winsted, CT), the Western Connecticut State University women's volleyball squad fell to visiting non-conference opponent SUNY-Morrisville, 3-2 (25-17, 26-24, 23-25, 16-25, 16-14) on Friday evening at Feldman Arena. The Colonials nearly completed the rally but came up just short, dropping to 5-2 overall. The Mustangs improved to 5-2.

"Overall, I thought we got off to a slow start but I was happy with the way we recovered after being down 2-0," said WestConn head coach Don Ferguson following the heartbreaking loss. "We had some opportunities down the stretch to finish but we didn't take advantage of them," he added.

WestConn rookie setter Rory McMaster (Canton, MI) was stellar once again, finishing with a match-high 39 assists, while junior Nicolina Chenard (Ardsley, NY) chipped in with eight floors and a match-high six service aces.

Junior outside hitter Kirsten Florio (Wellsboro, PA) paced SUNY-Morrisville with a match-high 14 kills while seniors Megyan Merrill (Millport, NY) and Amelia Baratier (Liverpool, NY) chipped in with 12 and 10, respectively.

Up 14-13 in the final set, the Colonials committed a service error to set up the Mustangs. Baratier wrapped the match up with back-to-back floors.

WestConn returns to action tomorrow when they host a quad-match. They meet Wesleyan at 10 a.m. before squaring up with Vassar at 4 p.m. Those squads also play matches with Morrisville in between.
