DANBURY, CT – Juniors Ali Brochu (Winsted, CT) and Nicolina Chenard (Ardsley, NY) each tallied 11 kills to guide the Western Connecticut State University women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-10, 25-20) victory over visiting non-league foe Connecticut College on Wednesday night at Feldman Arena. With the win, the Colonials improved to 7-3 overall while the Camels sank to 4-3.
The hosts stormed out of the gate with a 25-18 opening set win. However, the visitors rallied to knot the count at 1-1 when they squeaked out a 25-23 second set win.
The Colonials barrage then ensued. They burst out to a 20-4 advantage in the third set. The run was capped by a service ace from junior Victoria Korzan (Southbury, CT). WestConn would not look back the rest of the way.
Colonial reigning Little East Conference Rookie of the Week Rory McMaster (Canton, MI) dished out a match-high 29 assists while rookie Victoria Alomar (New Haven, CT) added match-highs of six aces and 16 digs. Sophomore Abbi Debes (New Milford, CT) tacked on three solo and three block assists.
"I thought we improved and played well today from start to finish. This win gives us some good confidence as we head into league play this weekend," stated WestConn head coach Don Ferguson following the match.
Junior outside hitter Katie Howley (Scituate, MA) led the Camels with 11 floors while senior setter Grace McGee (Portland, OR) chipped in with 25 assists.
WestConn returns to action for their LEC opener at Southern Maine on Saturday at Noon.
