Chenard Powers Women’s Volleyball Past RIC & Sarah Lawrence

DANBURY, CT – Junior Nicolina Chenard (Ardsley, NY) led the Western Connecticut State University women's volleyball team to a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena. She smashed a match-high 16 kills in a 3-1 (25-18, 25-18, 20-25, 25-16) victory over visiting Little East Conference foe Rhode Island College before racking up 11 in a 3-0 (25-10, 25-18, 25-18) non-league win over Sarah Lawrence College later in day. With the pair of victories, the Colonials improved to 11-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

"I'm happy we got the conference win against RIC. It was also nice to see some of our reserves see quality action in the late afternoon match against Sarah Lawrence," said WestConn head coach Don Ferguson following the action. "We need to continue moving in this strong and positive direction," he added.

In addition to Chenard's stellar effort, junior Victoria Korzan (Southbury, CT) and sophomore Abbi Debes (New Milford, CT) tallied double figures in kills with 14 and 10, respectively against the Anchorwomen. Rookie setter Rory McMaster (Canton, MI) also handed out a match-high 45 assists.

The Colonials had a much smoother road to victory in the second match versus the Gryphons. Debes notched another 10 floors, while junior Ali Brochu (Winsted, CT) also contributed 10. Rookie Taylor Rohan (Yonkers, NY) chipped in with six kills and two blocks.

In other afternoon play, RIC led the majority of the contest against Sarah Lawrence which led them to utilize many of their reserves en route to the 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-15) win.

Sophomore outside hitter Amelia Murphy (North Attleboro, MA) paced the Anchorwomen with a match-high 10 kills, while senior setter Jacqueline Jutras (Foster, RI) dished out 22 assists, also a match-high in the victory over Sarah Lawrence. Junior outside hitter Melanie Coleman (Forest Hills, NY) led the Gryphons with nine kills.

RIC moved to 4-8 overall and 0-2 in LEC play, while Sarah Lawrence dropped to 7-6 overall. WestConn returns to action for a non-league contest at Lehman on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
